Teaching

I love teaching!

The bulk of my experience with teaching is in teaching physics. This feels comfortable. It feels important. It’s certainly doable for me. I’ve also taught several math classes, which makes sense to me.

I haven’t done such a good job at teaching other stuff.

Teaching online classes has a certain appeal. But there’s a catch. The people who want to take online courses are looking for something specific. They want transformation.

Is teaching math and physics transformational? ABSOLUTELY! But it’s not something many potential students look for on Google.

People are looking to learn about the following “mega-niches”.

  • Health & Wellness
  • Style & Beauty
  • Sex, Love & Intimate Relationships
  • Parenting & Family
  • Life Purpose
  • Business & Entrepreneurship
  • Corporate Training & Consulting
  • Career & Professional Skill Development
  • Money & Finances
  • Real Estate
  • And about ten more…

All of this is according to Marisa Murgatroyd.

Do I have anything valuable to say about these mega-niches? I think so. I’ve learned a bit about each of these niches. However, they all seem fairly low on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

I feel like I have more to share about cognitive, aesthetic, and self-actualization needs. It bothers me that more people aren’t looking for this stuff!

What to do?

It’s always possible to share higher needs in a course about survival. But that seems cheeky.

I have produced an online course about acting. I’m very proud of the content. I just haven’t found a good way to market it. I’ve also produced a podcast about Everyday Heroes during the Covid-19 pandemic. Again, I’m proud of the content, and I’m not sure how to market it.

I guess I’m saying that I still want to teach. I’m just not sure how to reach my ideal students!
