Benefits of Profanity

Several studies show us the benefits of cursing. Here are a few examples from a CNN article.

Apart from what the studies say, I’m curious about using profanity in marketing.

Is it a good way to market a book?

I’m guessing it is. I just purchased a book called Quantum Bullsh*t. I have no idea if it’s a good book. But it caught my attention.

Previously, I’ve read The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck and Everything Is F*cked, both by Mark Manson. These are good books.

Based on the number of Amazon ratings, it looks like a LOT of people have read these books. I’m pretty sure the profanity in the titles boosted sales.

The question is whether or not the gig is up.

How often can profanity be used in book titles before it no longer makes a difference in sales?

Movies and TV shows might be considered edgy when filled with profanity. But an edgy bad script doesn’t outperform a non-edgy good script.

If anything, profanity can be used to help select an audience. But how much is too much? And how much are we going to see in the future?

Who can f*cking say?
