We can not create art from nothing.
Even science fiction and fantasy stories must be grounded in our human experiences.
Sometimes, writer’s block occurs when we feel empty and depleted. When this happens, we must pay attention to our experiences and create new ones.
My favorite way to do this is to travel.
Especially when I travel somewhere new, I get out of auto-pilot mode. I get bombarded by new sights and sounds. I have no choice. To a lesser degree, this happens when I meet someone new. Surprising conversations make me pay attention.
It also happens when I learn something new. That’s one of the reasons I love taking online courses and reading books. Filling the mind allows our imaginations to run wild.
While experiences are needed for us to create art, we can go too far. We can become experience junkies. We can spend all of our time living and get out of the habit of creating.
The trick is to find a healthy balance between living and creating. We can avoid getting stuck in repetitive patterns. With enough interesting experiences, anything is possible.
