There’s nothing like getting sick to help us appreciate being healthy. It’s been a rough year for me with regard to my physical health.
I’ve had a nasty chest cold for over a week now. Maybe it’s been due to two different viruses. I say this because my wife got a cold before me, started feeling better, and then caught what appears to be a different cold from me. I suspect that I went directly from the first one to the next.
Not that long before this cold, I was totally out of commission for about five days due to a stomach bug of some sort. Maybe it was a norovirus. And not long before that, I had another chest and sinus cold.
One good thing about being sick is that I used it as an excuse to binge-watch a couple of shows: Sense8, which is amazing, and 3 Body Problem, which is impressive, just not as much fun to watch.
While I’m sure that stress can lower our defenses, I don’t think this has been a particularly stressful time for me. I just haven’t been feeling well enough for long enough to restore my natural immunity!
OK, it’s time for a tangent.
I just turned off Grammarly, an extension that provides real-time suggestions as you are writing. I already have a bad habit of editing while I’m writing, and Grammarly just makes it worse. Maybe I can turn it back on when I’m done with an initial draft! (I did.)
Not all technology is good for us to use all of the time!
Why am I complaining about being sick? It’s because contrast matters in our lives. Feeling sick makes us appreciate how wonderful it is to feel healthy. Feeling sad makes us appreciate the times when we feel happy.
I am grateful for the times when I’m not feeling my best! They provide context so that I can better appreciate the times when I do feel great.
