Where to Retire?

I get the following list when I ask Google, “Where to retire?”

  • Daytona Beach
  • Fort Wayne
  • York
  • Georgia
  • Mexico
  • Panama
  • Reading
  • Brownsville
  • Lancaster
  • Harrisburg
  • Allentown
  • Lakeland
  • New York City
  • Pittsburgh
  • Scranton
  • Charleston
  • Youngstown
  • Toledo
  • Columbia
  • Malaysia
  • North Carolina
  • Portugal
  • Utah
  • Colorado

So, let’s take a closer look at these results.

Daytona Beach and Lakeland are the only locations in the state of Florida. That surprises me, given that the entire state of Florida is supposed to be a retirement haven. Maybe, Google doesn’t appreciate this article enough! Of course, the increasing number of dangerous hurricanes could be to blame.

I’m also surprised that the state of Pennsylvania comes up so often: York, Reading, Lancaster, Harrisburg, Allentown, Pittsburgh, and Scranton all rate.

I need to disqualify a few of these locations due to cold weather or heavy snow storms: New York City, Toledo, Utah, and Colorado.

Fort Wayne, Indiana and Youngstown, Ohio would be good if they had more sunny days. Georgia would be OK if it wasn’t in the deep South.

My wife hates Mexico, Panama, Columbia, and Malaysia, so we’ll skip those.

What’s left?

Brownsville, Texas is very close to Mexico (not ideal). Charleston, South Carolina might be OK. Somewhere in North Carolina might be OK.

Portugal sounds AMAZING to me.

So, if I had to guess, we may end up living in Pennsylvania or Portugal. Or both!

Let me know if you have other thoughts!
