How we contribute at work can make a monetary difference. Sometimes, it can be more than that. When we smile and say, “Good morning” to a co-worker, we contribute to that individual and to the health of the workplace culture.
Humans are social beings. Connecting with each other is a fundamental part of who we are. Giving and receiving kindness is crucial to our health and wellness.
If you’re in a leadership role, telling a team member what to do is not enough. Leadership is more about creating an environment where all team members can thrive.
Not everyone agrees with this leadership style.
Bullies rule through fear. There’s plenty of evidence that shows how motivating fear can be. Narcissists and miscreants have successfully generated massive sums of wealth.
But that’s no way to make the world a better place.
The most meaningful contributions arise through inspiring others and treating them as they want to be treated. No matter what roles you play, you can truly contribute by doing the following.
- Take the time to get to know the people in your life.
- Celebrate their wins.
- Encourage them.
- Enjoy the time you spend with them.
- Let them know where they can improve.
- Treat them with respect.
- Express gratitude when they’re there for you.
When we focus on building good relationships, we can make a positive difference every day.
