A Conversation in Song Lyrics

As a creative challenge, I’m putting together a short movie scene written entirely in song lyrics.

INT. KITCHEN – MORNING

JILL (26), still in her PJ’s, pours herself a glass of orange juice. CHELSEA (27) enters through the front door to their apartment, wearing a rumpled fancy dress. Instead of going to her room, Chelsea tentatively approaches Jill.

JILL

“Tell me what’s a-happening.” {What’s the Buzz?, JCS}

CHELSEA

“I’ve been working so hard.” {Footloose}

JILL

“Ain’t that the truth!” {Ain’t That the Truth}

After a moment of indecision, Chelsea motions for Jill to join her at the kitchen table. They sit down.

CHELSEA

“I’m movin’ out.” {Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)}

JILL

“What about us? What about all the times you said you had the answers?” {What About Us?}

CHELSEA

“Sorry seems to be the hardest word.” {Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word}

JILL

“I’ve been very hopeful so far. Now, for the first time, I think we’re going wrong.” {Could We Start Again Please?, JCS}

CHELSEA

“Ain’t been sober since maybe October of last year.” {Breathe (2 AM)}

JILL

“I guess that’s why they call it the blues.” {I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues}

Overwhelmed, Chelsea stands up and takes a step back.

CHELSEA

“Life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone.” {Jack and Diane}

Jill pins Chelsea with a look of resignation.

JILL

“Goodbye, stranger, it’s been nice. Hope you find your paradise. Tried to see your point of view. Hope your dreams will all come true.” {Goodbye Stranger}

Chelsea turns and goes to her room to start packing. Jill takes another sip of her orange juice.

FADE OUT.
