Musical Movies

I love musicals!

Recently, I took the time to watch In the Heights and Tick, Tick… Boom! again. Both of these are excellent movies. Here are a few reasons why each of them speaks to me.

The energy that courses through In the Heights is contagious. I love the characters, locations, and situations. I particularly like the idea that it’s up to us to make a home where we are rather than looking to escape.

I say this even though I often want to escape to some faraway land! The best part of watching In the Heights again is that I watched the movie with my daughter.

She got hooked on the music, and we both enjoyed watching it together, which doesn’t happen often.

A few of the songs from Tick, Tick… Boom! are surprisingly magical in how they move the story forward. The following come to mind.

I am drawn to the creative struggle that Andrew Garfield does such a great job of depicting. It is noble to try something creatively challenging, to fail to get the response you’ve been hoping for, and then to get up and start again on your next creative project.

Although I tried to get to get Mikayla to watch Tick, Tick… Boom!, she wasn’t interested, at least not when I wanted to watch it.

If you ask me, both of these movies are worth watching more than once! They both feature good acting, directing, cinematography, and editing. They both depict something true about the creative process and storytelling.

More to the point, they both resonate with me.
