Yesterday, I decided to take a trip down Memory Lane. I drove through the neighborhood where I grew up, where I went to school from kindergarten through third grade.
The house where my family lived during this time is still there. Here’s what it looks like now, almost 50 years later.

If you look behind this house, you can see a large tree in the back yard. My father and uncles built an amazing tree house in this tree. I have so many great memories of spending time in that tree house, both on my own and with family and friends. Not long after we moved, the new owners got rid of the tree house. I can’t imagine why!
We had a covered porch in the back, and I wasn’t afraid to climb up a ladder to stand on this part of the roof. It didn’t seem so high up, and I enjoyed jumping off. In retrospect, I was lucky not to break any bones!
My friends and I walked to and from Slavens Elementary School.
It’s still there, although I’m not sure if it’s still an elementary school.

I remember our strict 2nd grade teacher, Ms. Phillips, and our wonderful 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Flanigan. I couldn’t believe that our kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Blaumberg, could guess who we were when we were all wearing our Halloween costumes.
One of my favorite movie theaters is not too far from Slavens. Chez Artiste is where I watched Fiddler on the Roof for the first time.

I’m amazed that it’s still being used as a movie theater!
Although I’m not sure why I wanted to swing by the old neighborhood, I’m glad that I did.
