Priorities

I think it’s natural for our priorities to change over time.

This means that we may be changing our direction when others don’t expect us to change. That’s OK. That’s part of what it means to be human.

It’s important to continually ask ourselves what’s important. External events happen. Do any of these events require us to make a course correction?

We can live through hours, days, and years without any significant change in our priorities. Some people are very focused on a mission that keeps their priorities relatively fixed for a LONG time. That’s great!

It may be that I don’t have convictions that are quite so strong. I’m a curious person, and I value curiosity. I think creativity demands us to always ask the important questions. If we can be open to the “winds of change”, we can respond in a way that is true to ourselves, even if that means our priorities need to be updated.

Speaking of the Winds of Change, this is the title of one of my favorite stories by Isaac Asimov. If you haven’t read it, I encourage you to check it out!

So, what should we do when our priorities change? I think there is a balance between being inquisitive and being bold. We should acknowledge the fact that we’re feeling the “winds of change”. We should ask ourselves what this means for us and for the people we care about.

And we should be courageous. When it becomes obvious that it’s time to change our priorities, we should embrace the changes. We do not live in a static world. Everything around us is in motion. We should not cling to past choices just for the sake of “being consistent”.

Each day is a new day. If we allow it, we can learn new things, and we can grow. I don’t want you to be the same person I may have known yesterday. I want you to become the person who you can be today!

And I want to do the same.

If that means my priorities can be revised, so be it!
