There is no such thing

There is no such thing as a “perfect job”.

I defy anyone to tell me otherwise!

Actually, let me amend my statement. “There is no such thing as a perfect job for me.” I don’t know what’s going on in other people’s brains. Just as some humans are better adapted to corporate life than I am, I’m sure that some humans may be overwhelmingly content with how they spend their working lives.

Personally, I’ve had many highs and lows related to working.

I’ve been able to work with several amazing organizations, including BNL, CERN, RRCC, LEGO, and TBCT. Here’s the thing: Even when I look back on my most amazing opportunities, I’m aware of the fact that each job includes many things I love, along with a few things I don’t love.

I truly LOVE teaching, yet I don’t enjoy grading homework. (Let’s not confuse the issue with what AI may be able to do these days.) I love doing physics research, although many aspects of it are tedious.

It’s not just that work has highs and lows. Our lives have highs and lows. It’s unreasonable for anyone to expect work highs all the time.

The Lesson: Expect that you’re going to have to do many things you don’t love when you’re working. Even at a job that you love.

The Goal: Minimize the number of things you don’t like in your job (any job), and maximize the things you do like.
