Yesterday, I discovered that Randall Munroe has written another What If? book.

Now, I’m thrilled to be reading What If? 2!

Writing books like this is a great way to leverage a background in math and physics! I’ve been a fan of his web comic xkcd for many years.
While searching for the images above, I came across one of the xkcd comics that made him famous. Check it out here. It’s from May of 2007, and things have changed significantly since then.
Here’s a more current estimate of where people spend their time online.

This is fairly easy to believe. I probably spend more time on Facebook than YouTube. And I’m almost never on Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, X (Twitter), Threads, Bluesky, or Truth Social. I do spend a fair amount of time on LinkedIn, Reddit, and Wikipedia.
Is this a tangent? I prefer face-to-face interactions to online interactions. I still enjoy going to live theater and music events. I think it’s valuable for people to spend time offline in the real world.
Having said this, if you’re going to be online, xkcd is a nice place to be.
PS: Read What If? 2!
