Screenwriting vs. Directing

This is a very personal post, because I enjoy both screenwriting and directing.

Screenwriting is mostly the effort of ONE person. Directing depends on MANY people doing their jobs well.

For me, Directing is the sweet spot. There is nothing like being on a set and doing the work to coordinate many people to tell a story.

Having said that, you need to have a story worth telling. That’s where Screenwriting comes into play.

Other people are better writers than me. But they’re not putting my stories on the page.

There is something very satisfying in telling a story that’s yours.

So, I’m learning. I’m taking classes and practicing writing screenplays to get better. I’m taking the time to learn how to tell some of the stories that resonate with me.

It’s not easy.

In many ways, directing is easier than screenwriting. But I don’t tend to shy away from an activity I enjoy just because it’s difficult.

Sometimes, the most rewarding work is the most challenging work.

For example, being a father isn’t easy. Nevertheless, it is rewarding.

As much as I value learning from the stories of others, making movies means the most to me when I can put my own stories on the screen.
