Power Outage

I woke up this morning to a realization that the power was out.

My CPAP machine wasn’t running, and I wasn’t breathing as easy as I otherwise might have been. Soon, I confirmed that I wasn’t able to turn on any lights. Next, I looked outside and realized that our entire neighborhood was dark.

Not a big deal.

Which is to say that temporary power outages are not a big deal. As long as the power comes back on within a few hours, it’s something unexpected and potentially fun. We could light candles!

However, a prolonged power outage would not be so much fun. Going to the bathroom isn’t particularly easy in the dark. Food rotting in our freezer is not great. When the temperatures get lower in the dead of the winter, we would be cold.

Even one week without power would be a challenge!

We have come to rely on power and on WiFi. When I work remotely, I can’t do my job when our WiFi is down.

While I’m not worried, it makes me appreciate the idea of having a backup generator, or at least a large battery that could power our home!

Do gas stations dispense gas when the power is out? How far would I need to drive to get food each day? I can see lights on just a few miles away. But what if the entire city of Denver and the surrounding areas were without power for a week? People would be in serious trouble!

We don’t tend to think about how vulnerable we are most days.

Oh, the power came back on. Thank goodness!
