I was a physics instructor for about five years. I was an aerospace engineer for about five years. I was a video game developer for about five years. I wrote software for various companies for another five years.
I’ve been at Terumo BCT for about six years, which is the longest time I’ve ever worked for one company. And I can imagine staying a lot longer.
Even though I’ve done it frequently, changing jobs can be stressful. It’s nice to want to stay at a single company for more than five years.
My sister has worked for three companies during her entire career. I’ve worked for over eighteen. She thinks I’m crazy! (And she may be right.)
I’ve been lucky; I’ve enjoyed a variety of work experiences. I know a little bit about a lot of industries. And some of my jobs have been extraordinary! I don’t think I’ll ever fully retire. While I may choose to work on some fun projects that don’t pay very well, I can’t imagine wanting to sit at home all day watching TV.
I’ve always felt good about my ability to get a new job. Still, I recognize that ageism exists. It may become more difficult for me to get a good job as I get closer to retirement age.
I want to continue working on projects that matter. I want to keep improving my skills. I never want to stop learning and growing.
