What is the Value of a Math Problem?

Today, I learned that OpenAI has solved over 375 advanced math problems.

While we may eventually find mistakes in the AI solutions, this is definitely a “brave new world”. My guess is that most of the solutions are probably correct.

Just as AI has learned how to vanquish chess grandmasters, now AI has learned how to solve some of humanity’s most intractable math problems. Like chess games, math problems may be considered esoteric.

Don’t let this fool you!

AI is no longer a “curiosity”. AI is now a force to be reckoned with! When AI solves problems that have stumped experienced humans for decades or centuries, we need to take notice.

The solutions to these math problems are most likely not a “life-or-death” affair. They may not directly affect most people.

Again, don’t let this fool you!

If AI can solve these math problems, it can almost certainly solve many physics problems, which may lead to several technological advances. It may also solve problems in chemistry, molecular biology, and more.

Humans may never again make the most striking intellectual breakthroughs we tend to cherish!

Does this mean that humans should stop studying math and physics?

No. Humans need to double-check any work completed by AI.

Is it possible for humans to continue to make unique discoveries?

Yes. Even if such advances become rarer.

The value of a math problem is twofold: it lets humans practice their problem-solving abilities, and it may lead to future discoveries.

With AI in the mix, humans should still practice their problem-solving abilities. Does it matter whether humans or AI models uncover more future discoveries?
