Returning to Abandoned Projects

Some projects are not meant to be completed.

Some projects are not meant to be completed at the time they are conceived.

James Cameron gives us an example of this. The technology did not exist to achieve the level of detail he wanted for his movie, Avatar. However, without creating Avatar when he did, I’m not sure we would have the technology today that has allowed him to make the sequels.

Avatar came out in 2009. Avatar: The Way of Water came out in 2022, and Avatar: Fire and Ash came out in 2025. One reason for the delay after the first Avatar movie was to improve the technology to make the next two movies more visually stunning.

Yesterday and today, I found myself playing a few fragments of songs I had written from a musical I wanted to create over twenty-five years ago.

Does this mean I want to complete the musical within the next year? Of course not! It just means that this abandoned project still resonates with me. I’m not sure why it’s tugging at my heart now.

Have I learned something about myself during the past quarter-century? Have I become a better storyteller? Is there still something of me in the songs I wrote so long ago?

I don’t know. But I can say this: Unfinished projects have value!
