Subtlety

It’s easy to read headlines and miss out on the whole story.

Often, headlines are designed to mislead us. Social media exacerbates the problem. When we react to people fuming about a headline, we don’t always take the time to learn enough about the whole story.

There is no contentious issue that lacks subtlety.

It’s good to learn enough about an issue to challenge our beliefs. It’s good to discuss the shades of grey missed by those who only want to live in a black-and-white world.

By acknowledging that systems are complex, we can learn to appreciate the elements that lead to complexity. We can understand the relationships that influence how systems evolve.

It doesn’t matter if we’re considering individual decision-making, family dynamics, network dynamics, or world politics. Where complexity arises, subtle differences matter.

We can learn a lot by looking for subtlety!
