Today, I watched a movie called The Rainmaker, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and released in 1997, based on a novel by John Grisham.
It’s a good movie, with an IMDB rating of 7.2 stars.
Here’s the thing. It could not be made today.
It features Matt Damon, Danny DeVito, and Claire Danes. It’s not a superhero movie, and it doesn’t have a huge special effects budget. It doesn’t have a remarkable premise.
It’s a solid movie based on a good script with a great cast. Unfortunately, that’s not enough these days to warrant a theatrical release.
A movie like this could be released directly to a streaming platform like Amazon. But today, it most likely would not have a comparable cast. It would be lost in the sea of mediocre movies that get enough viewings to be made but not enough to be remembered.
I’m glad more movies are being made today compared to when I was a kid! I’m sad that “everyday stories” often don’t get the treatment they deserve.
