Three Rooms

I live in a nice house with my wife and daughter, Karilyn and Mikayla. We spend a lot of time together in the kitchen and living area.

We also spend time apart. Sometimes, Mikayla wants to eat, do artwork, wash laundry, or care for her baby doll without any interference from Karilyn or me. During these times, Karilyn and I often work on our separate projects.

I’m in my home office.

Karilyn is in our bedroom.

Mikayla is in our living area.

We live our separate lives in three different rooms.

It’s good for Mikayla to have some autonomy. It’s good for Karilyn and me to step away from Mikayla and do our own things.

I am reminded of how Elton John and Bernie Taupin create songs. They do their work separately. Bernie writes potential lyrics alone in his room and sends them to Elton John. Later, Elton writes music to go with these lyrics in his own space. Eventually, he performs the finished songs, and Bernie listens to the results.

Everyone needs to live their own lives.

It’s good that we can be there for each other and help each other. And it’s good that we can do our own things in separate rooms.
