Oligarchy or Democracy

I just watched the following video by Robert Reich.

While it doesn’t feature any new ideas, it provides a useful context for understanding current issues in the United States of America.

“We must make our choice. We may have democracy, or we may have wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we cannot have both.”

— Louis D. Brandeis, a Supreme Court Justice (1941)

Starting in 1980, most of the country’s economic gains began going to the wealthiest individuals and companies. This trend persists to this day.

While the USA is called a representative democracy, the representatives in the House and Senate typically do not represent the most important concerns for most of their constituents. They more faithfully represent the concerns of the lobbyists who help them get elected.

During the Industrial Revolution, the wealthiest individuals and companies had a much louder voice than everyone else.

The same is true again today.
