Project Work

My most important activities over the years have been connected to working on meaningful projects. This is not a coincidence.

What’s the best way to contribute to the future of humanity?

Work on meaningful projects.

I’m not joking. Artists are encouraged to build a portfolio of meaningful projects. While this is not a requirement for software engineers, it is a good practice.

If you’ve completed a collection of meaningful projects, you’re already far ahead of most people.

Because I like making movies, many projects I’ve worked on are related to movie-making. If you can get good at making short movies, you can eventually get good at making full-length movies.

There are so many different types of projects that are relevant today!

You can create poems, murals, comic books, songs, podcasts, short movies, documentaries, comedy routines, music videos, small businesses, games, and more!

I don’t think we all need to be Influencers. We don’t all need to be teachers or doctors or engineers. We all need to do the work that is calling us. At least some of it!

We need to write essays, sermons, speeches, articles, Ph. D. dissertations, books, and more! We need to understand how our unique contributions to society can be leveraged.

We need to welcome the uncertainty and ambiguity that accompanies most projects. I’m not saying that project work is easy. I’m not saying that doing project work is going to make you happy.

What I am saying is that meaningful projects matter.

The world has enough problems without us adding fuel to the fire. Instead of stoking the flames of destruction and division, focus on creating projects that inspire others and lead to beautiful relationships.

Be kind. Be curious. And complete many meaningful projects!
