Discovering Lost Songs

I’m more than a little excited to learn about the Chopin waltz that has been discovered after nearly 200 years!

You can hear Lang Lang play it here.

This reminds me of Now and Then, a song that became the last “official” Beatles song.

John was working on a demo in his apartment in New York City. In 1994, the remaining three Beatles learned about this song John had recorded on a cassette tape before he died.

The song languished for many years. In 2001, George died. In 2022, with machine learning, Peter Jackson helped develop the technology to separate music tracks for his Get Back documentary movie.

This allowed the remaining Beatles to lift John’s voice separate from his piano playing (which was too loud).

Paul recorded a new bass line, and Ringo recorded the drums. They added strings and a slide guitar solo. They mixed everything.

The result was amazing!

Whether it’s Chopin or the Beatles, I love that lost songs can be discovered and made available for future generations.
