Your Place

Based on a recommendation from Adam Grant, I ran across this article, There’s a Place for Everyone.

I mostly agree with the message. I especially agree that finding people who might embrace your specific weirdness can be tough, for the reasons mentioned.

Here’s my objection. There is not just ONE PLACE for everyone. There are MANY PLACES for everyone. Humans are multi-dimensional.

There is no ONE THING I want to do in life to the exclusion of everything else. And I’m not alone in feeling this way!

There Are Many Places for Everyone!

As an example, I’ve had many different jobs and many different hobbies. I’ve loved each one for many different reasons. Sometimes, I’ve learned lessons from one job I didn’t like all that much which led me to another job I loved.

If Bach was born today, I’m not convinced he would be writing symphonies. Even if he did write music, I’m sure it would be nothing like what he wrote in the 18th Century.

Your place at any moment depends on your previous experiences, your actions, and more than a little luck. More to the point, your place is not fixed.

Even if you are mostly known for your underwater basket-weaving expertise, you’re likely to engage in other activities that enrich your life and allow you to enrich the lives of others.

Don’t search for that one, elusive thing you think might make you happy. Instead, be curious about the many possibilities ahead of you.

Embrace the many weird things that make you unique!
