Marketing

I suspect that many people may disagree with this.

I’m pretty sure that I don’t know what I’m talking about. But here’s what I’ve observed.

Marketing tends to work best for people who have a SINGLE BRAND. If you’re just an author, and all of your online activity revolves around being an author, then chances are good that you can capitalize on that.

For example, Eben Pagan has identified himself as a Coach. It’s true that he’s done a lot of work that doesn’t fit so nicely within the label of coaching. Nevertheless, I suspect that he tends to make money now primarily as a Coach.

However, I don’t think that most people are just one thing.

To continue with this example, Eben Pagan is more than just a coach. He is an author, a public speaker, a business consultant, and more. Yet, the variety of experiences that he has had does not show up explicitly in his marketing materials. At this point in time, he presents himself primarily as a Coach.

So, what’s the best approach for people to take if they consider themselves to be MORE than just one thing?

Experience dictates that concerning marketing they should focus on just one thing.

I struggle with this notion. I am LOTS OF THINGS.

Nevertheless, I am OK with the idea of just picking one of these things for a time. Is this the equivalent of being a sell-out?

We’ll see.
