Sometimes, we don’t know what we want.
We need to try out new things. I like to think of it as playing a role in a play. We put on the new costume, learn the lines, and step into the new role.
When I feel stuck, I look at the roles that I’m currently playing in my life.
Do I want to do anything different as a father? Perhaps. Minor modifications could make sense. But it’s not like I’m going to throw out what is probably my most important role!
Do I want to do anything different as an employee? I know I don’t want to change jobs at this point. So again, I’m thinking of minor tweaks.
Do I want to start a new hobby? To be honest, I’m more interested in digging deeper into some of my current hobbies. And that’s when you know that you’ve hit gold. If there’s something that you’ve been missing, it’s time to explore that role again. It’s time to dig deeper.
One of my favorite hobbies is playing the piano. I love to learn new songs, and I can do this fairly quickly. Even though I’ve been playing piano most of my life, I love the thrill of making new discoveries while practicing. I love seeing my hands play a melody that I’ve previously only heard in my head.
Treasure the roles that are calling you back. Embrace them! Play!
Don’t do it for the possibility of making money. Don’t treat it as an obligation. And don’t get lost in the noise of daily life. Instead, be ready to experiment. Find what Julia Cameron refers to as your “Vein of Gold: A Journey to Your Creative Heart”.
