In my previous post, I talked about loving this quote.
“The lesson of Icarus isn’t to stop flying so high. It’s to build better wings.”
Here’s another reason why this quote is so great. It’s concise. In just a few words, it packs a powerful punch. And it’s surprising!
Of course, if you are unfamiliar with the myth of Daedalus and Icarus, the quote is not so great. What makes it effective is our shared understanding of the story indicated in the quote.
This is one of the reasons why storytelling is so essential. Myths and dreams give us a common language that we can use to express our ideas more efficiently and with greater impact.
It’s why analogies and metaphors are so great. We understand more when we can tap into our shared experiences. We all feel big emotions. We all have hopes and dreams. Most of us want the best for our kids.
Language is made up of symbols. We use words to express ideas that are difficult to capture and pin down.
It’s the stories we tell that provide greater understanding. When we share stories, we get to know each other better.
Storytelling is a precondition for brevity!
