Gems from Telluride

One of my favorite things to do during the Telluride Film Festival is to attend the Noon Panel Discussions, the Conversations, and the Q&A Sessions.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the talks I attended on Saturday.

“All cultures are remembered for two things: their brutality and art.”

This came up during a discussion of The Nickel Boys movie. Sometimes, art can give meaning to brutality; art can help us understand each other.

At noon, the discussion revolved around how cinema has changed during the last fifty years.

Someone said, “Phones help us obscure ourselves from ourselves.” The question is: Can we still have a private inner life when everything we record for social media is a show? Who are we beyond the performances we give others?

“The only reality of a film is the reality of its own making.” This one is good to remember throughout the process of making a movie.

“The grammar of dreams is what informs the grammar of film.” When you recall your dreams, you can recognize some as being very cinematic.

The following quotes offer great advice for anyone with creative yearnings.

“Form is inseparable from content.”

“Collaboration is the only way forward.”

Each moment of the Telluride Film Festival is a gift. That’s true of each moment in our lives; it’s just that I really feel it when I’m at Telluride.
