Location Matters

The ideas we have are shaped, in part, by our environment.

When I’m at Starbucks, the sights, sounds, and smells are different than at home. Sometimes, I get interesting ideas while taking a walk or showering.

When I become aware of specific world events, my mind is in a slightly different space than when I am blissfully unaware of what’s happening in the world.

When I’m around friends, my thoughts jump toward our shared experiences.

It’s no accident that artists often find inspiration in far-away places. Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, Picasso, and James Joyce all connected while living abroad in Paris.

The trick is to notice when and where you are most creative. What habits feed your creativity? What places inspire you to do good work consistently?

Notice the locations that shape your thoughts and feelings. Then, spend more time in the places that resonate with who you want to be.
