Stunts

Marketing stunts can be very effective.

Just because someone does a great job marketing something doesn’t mean the thing being marketed has much value.

Humans can be easily fooled by the hype. We’re fooled by displays of social proof. We’re fooled by empty promises.

We live in a world where it’s not easy to get noticed. This leads many people to spend lots of time trying to get noticed. The unfortunate consequence is that we don’t always spend enough time creating the thing we want to be noticed for. We’re too busy trying to get noticed!

I don’t have a solution to this conundrum.

My approach at the moment is to spend my limited time creating things that not many people know about. I understand that marketing is absolutely required to get noticed. I’m just more interested in creating things than in getting noticed.

I’m well aware that could change at any time. As soon as I have an awesome script that I want to turn into a movie, I’m going to want to find investors. I’m going to want to get noticed! But I don’t have that awesome script yet.

I’m very curious to see how this dynamic plays out in the years to come. I may end up doing my own marketing stunts. I may end up wondering if my stuff is worth all the marketing hype I’m producing.

But I’m not there yet. For now, I’m not at all worried about getting noticed. Spending my time creating is too much fun!
