Happiness

Having a big home doesn’t make me happy.

Don’t get me wrong. I love the house we live in. It’s so much better than the dorm rooms I had in college.

But nice accommodations are not the primary lever for my happiness.

My happiness revolves around feelings of contribution. I want to work on meaningful projects.

The good news: I consider many projects meaningful.

The bad news: I’m not sure most of these imagined projects are commercial.

I’ve become more convinced than ever that most successful projects depend on MANY people. Collaboration is what it’s all about.

I consider myself very lucky. When looking at Maslow’s pyramid, I’m not too worried about meeting my basic needs. I’m pretty much fine with my safety needs.

I’m lucky that I’m most concerned about the top of the pyramid. I want to focus on my Love & Belonging, Esteem, and Self-Actualization needs.

Is it true that the higher up we go on the pyramid, the greater our happiness? I’m not sure.

Happiness is a slippery concept. Just when we think we might be getting there, the destination changes. It’s a journey.

While striving for happiness doesn’t ensure it, we must keep our eyes open.
