The Academy Awards

Ahead of time, I correctly guessed 14 of the 21 Academy Awards granted today.

That’s two-thirds, or 66%: not a good grade from an academic POV! But it’s also not bad. My movie sensibilities at least track with the people voting.

Have I seen ALL of the movies nominated? No. Especially not the shorts. But I have seen the big hitters: One Battle After Another, Sinners, Frankenstein, and more.

Are the Academy Awards worth more than a clever marketing campaign? Yes!

The thing I love about movies is how difficult they are to create. They don’t depend on just one thing going well. They require an ensemble of experts working together to create something truly remarkable.

We have awards for acting, cinematography, directing, editing, casting, and more. So many things have to go well for a movie to be amazing!

We all have our opinions. Some of us are going to like Wake Up Dead Man more than One Battle After Another. Some are going to dismiss Sinners just because it’s a musical about vampires.

Still, I LOVE the fact that we celebrate the accomplishments of the people who bring movies to life! All jobs should have this sort of international recognition.

Every store clerk who wishes customers a happy day should have his or her chance to shine. Every bank teller who greets you with a smile should know that their work matters.

Every teacher should not have to wait for their retirement party to know that they’ve changed lives.

Pretty much all work is important. It’s a shame that not everyone can be considered for the equivalent of an Academy Award!
