Birth of Ideas

I love the feeling when a new idea emerges from my tired, old mind.

Call it inspiration. Call it an “ah-ha” moment.

It’s not everyday that we come up with something new. That is, something new to us. It’s entirely possible that others have had very similar thoughts before.

Today, while taking a walk, I came up with the idea of a song fragment. I don’t know if I’ll ever turn this fragment into a complete song. And that’s okay. Not all ideas deserve lots of attention.

But some do.

Some ideas won’t stay quiet. They speak up and demand at least some level of action. When these ideas call out to me, I do my best to give them a seat at the table.

Even the table of my own mind doesn’t have room for too many ideas. But the ones that take a seat there are special to me.

Whether I pay attention to them for a few minutes, a few hours, a few days, or more, they resonate. They lift my soul. They make me feel alive.

I am grateful for these ideas. I am thrilled to spend at least a bit of time with each of them! I’m past the stage of hoping that every idea is worth pursuing. Some are going to wither and die. Still, I am committed to giving each new idea space to grow. I’m happy to write about the ideas. I’m happy to share them with others. I’m happy to test them when that makes sense.

And I’m happy to acknowledge that playful ideas are essential!

My life would be rather boring and drab without an infusion of essential ideas. By “essential”, I don’t mean that these ideas have much value to anyone other than myself. I’m talking about ideas that help me to feel more alive. And the best of these ideas may actually make a difference in the lives of other people.

I don’t really care how many of these ideas turn out to be commercial. I’m not depending on these ideas to bring in buckets of money.

Instead, I’m just happy to welcome these ideas into my life.

Because ideas matter!
