When I was a kid, I thought the future was only going to get better. While I admit to being a bit naive, I never imagined that the United States of America would have a President like Trump.
I’m an optimistic person. I really do believe that we can figure shit out together and that we can make the world a better place.
Having said this, I realize that in many ways the world is not a better place than it was when I was a kid.
The decline of the middle class is an issue that definitely upsets me.
The rise of big money in politics, especially after Citizen’s United, is another issue that bothers me. Democracy works best when everyone in a society is able to have an equal voice.
The rise of oligarchy sucks! I even wrote a song about it.
As an optimist, I am faced with the reality that the United States of America can do better.
I love this scene from The Newsroom, by Aaron Sorkin and featuring Jeff Daniels. Watch it now.
I want to help people who want to make the world a better place.
I want to collect ideas for improving the future of humanity.
I want to enjoy the world as it is now, while knowing that we can make it even better. While I may be discouraged by the status quo, I refuse to give up on what’s possible.
That’s what it means to be an optimist!
