A Taste of Something Rare

Tonight, I took a journey back.

I started to watch a movie that was made when I was a kid. I never watched this adult movie when I was a kid.

It features a couple of actors who went on to play amazing roles. In a way, it feels like I’m catching up. I recognize the fact that I was too young to appreciate their work at the time the movie came out.

While the story moves a bit slower than most movies I watch today, that doesn’t take anything away from the artistry involved in the way they made this movie in 1980.

In fact, it makes me want to watch more of their earlier movies!

It’s a conundrum. There are many movies made today that I want to see. However, some of the great movies from the 70’s and 80’s (and other decades) are better than the most recent offerings on Netflix.

Extraordinary movies are still being made today.

Unfortunately, a much larger number of mediocre movies are also being made — compared to when I was a kid. Today, anyone can make a movie. The threshold for entry is low enough that a kid in grade school can get his movie on a streaming platform today.

Soon, an AI agent may be able to create a full-length mediocre movie! This means it’s more difficult to find the highest quality movies being made today.

If I have a recommendation, it’s to watch the best movies being made today in addition to the best movies from every decade that we’ve been making movies.

We can learn a lot from revisiting the past!
