Misplaced Loyalty

People want to belong.

At times, especially in high school, we sacrifice what’s in our best interest to feel a sense of belonging.

I think it’s a mistake to tell someone that you would do anything for him or her. I’m not going to commit murder for anyone!

I’m all about being agreeable and doing what I can to make others feel good about themselves. I’m not about stroking a leader’s ego or taking bribes to get ahead.

Narcissists tend to inspire loyalty. They think their ambitions are more important than whatever anyone else might want. When a leader uses threats to get his way, he may not be worth following!

Look for red flags before expressing loyalty to a leader. Know how much of an ask is too much. Be true to yourself before being loyal to anyone else.

I value individuals who are able to think for themselves. I value leaders who surround themselves with people who offer conflicting opinions and advice. Blindly following anyone is an invitation for disaster. “Yes men” are deplorable.

Merit should matter more than loyalty.

Loyalty is often a misplaced virtue.
