On this website, I’ve included a page called My Heroes. This is a very intentional choice. Many people have inspired me in countless ways. I’m not even close to listing all of the people who have inspired me.
I haven’t included sections for people whom I admire for being kind, or funny, or generous, or wise. And maybe I should!
There are so many admirable traits that we see people embody in our daily lives! From the barista behind the counter who serves you coffee or tea with a smile to your co-worker who is “hitting balls out of the park” just by doing the job well, the people in your life are amazing!
Specific people are very much an inspiration to me.
Having said this, I’m not suggesting that you should try to become an inspiration to others. I don’t think that’s what gets the juices flowing. At least not for me.
Instead, become an inspiration to yourself! Become a person who you would look to for inspiration. Become a person who your younger self would admire.
Do the things that you admire other people for doing.
It’s easy to talk about what we value. I can tell you that I value curiosity, kindness, and playfulness. But if you met in a park one day and we struck up a conversation, I wonder what you would see. Would I strike you as a curious person who is kind and playful? Do I embody these traits in my daily interactions with people?
Again, I’m not so concerned about what others would think about me if we had a conversation in the park. I’m wondering if I would find myself inspirational while looking back on specific moments.
Do the actions I take daily express my beliefs and values? Sometimes I think they do, and other times, it’s obvious they don’t. We do the best we can. That’s what it means to be human.
Just remember that actions speak louder than words. When possible, let your actions be an inspiration to you!
