Revenge of the Tipping Point

As promised, here are some thoughts regarding Malcolm Gladwell’s latest book, Revenge of the Tipping Point. Instead of updating his first book, The Tipping Point, Gladwell explores different questions with this sequel, twenty-five years later.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the book, as narrated by the author. (That’s why I provided the Audible link above.)

The concepts related to social contagion are fascinating. In Revenge of the Tipping Point, he takes a closer look at the following.

  • “The Overstory” is how he describes the specific context that allows a virus or an idea to spread. It turns out that a homogenous group may be more susceptible to certain epidemics than a diverse group.
  • “Super Spreaders” are the individuals most responsible for spreading a virus. In the case of COVID-19, a small number of infected individuals are responsible for a large percentage of the transmission.
  • “The Magic Third” is a way of describing how a system is going to tip. Change happens slowly before a tipping point is reached and very quickly afterward.
  • “Social Engineering” is on the rise. With our knowledge of tipping points, we can manipulate systems, intentionally and unintentionally. As Stan Lee says, “With great power comes great responsibility.”

Along the way, Gladwell examines the Ivy League admissions process for athletes, the genetics of cheetahs, a surprising shift in the opioid epidemic, and more.

This book is engaging and thought-provoking. And I love how he uses stories to illuminate these ideas!
