The Fibonacci Sequence

Here’s a cool explanation of why the Fibonacci sequence appears in nature.

Note: The following assumes that you took the time to read this article by Dr. Katie Spalding.

I previously hadn’t considered that there must be a “most irrational” number, and I certainly didn’t know it as “phi”.

This is one of the things I love about math and science. Wonderful surprises abound for the curious souls who dive in.

It makes sense that natural evolution “wants” to maximize certain traits, like the ability to collect as much sunlight as possible. It also makes sense that this involves patterns that rely on the most irrational number!

“So, the ubiquity of the Fibonacci numbers isn’t just coincidence – it’s the result of a perfectly evolved optimization algorithm in nature.”

– Dr. Katie Spalding (from the linked article)

Understanding more about nature feels great!
